Every antique tractor has a history and a story to tell, but few come close to matching the one about the 1937 John Deere D Gold Leaf tractor, which appears on the March page of the 2001 Classic Farm Tractors Calendar. As far as anyone knows, it was the only John Deere ever painted gold, and it was done in connection with that company's centennial celebration in 1937. A report about the gold leaf John Deere D appeared in the September 2, 1938, issue of Implement & Tractor. The article included a photograph of the dealer, Josiah Gooden of Kingfisher, Oklahoma, delivering the gold leaf tractor to C.D. Hancock, a large farmer in Kingfisher County. A little boy, George Gooden, grandson of the dealer, appears in the old photo.
