Productivity of Freshwater Carps in Inland Salt Affected Waterlogged Areas of Punjab, India - A Field Study

Outdoor research trials were conducted to assess productivity of freshwater carps viz. Catla catla Ham. (catla), Labeo rohita Ham.(rohu), Cirrhinus mrigala Ham. (mrigal), Cyprinus carpio Linn, (common carp) and Ctenopharyngodon idella Val. (grass carp) at different stocking densities in a semi-intensive poly-culture system in inland salt affected waterlogged waste lands in south west Punjab. Based on preliminary bioassay studies and on-farm rearing of freshwater carps in inland saline water, fingerlings of carps were stocked in earthen ponds @ 10,000 ha~(-1), 12,500 ha~(-1) and 15,000 ha~(-1). Fish was fed with farm made supplementary diet @ 5% for the first month and @ 2% during following months. Overall survival offish remained unaffected and productivity offish increased from 2.48 tonne (t) ha~(-1)yr~(-1) to 3.40 t ha~(-1)yr~(-1) with increase in stocking density from 10,000 to 15,000 fingerlings ha~(-1). The studies conclude that owing to reduced growth rate of fish in inland saline water pondas compared to freshwater ponds, the pond accommodated increased stocking density and resulted in 37.5% higher productivity.
