摘要

The existence of genetic variation forms the basis for the genetic improvement of livestock. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) represent a potential tool for analysing the variation in DNA sequences. SNPs are digital markers and are superior to any other conventional molecular markers. SNPs have gained more popularity in several breed improvement programmes due to their abundance in the genome and the amenability for automation. In the past decade, SNPs have revolutionized the field of molecular biology and thus, one can hope that genetic maps based on SNPs will assist animal geneticists and breeders in marker-assisted breed improvement programmes. The present review analyses these different aspects of SNP as a modern tool to study the genomic variations for the genetic improvement of dairy animals..
