Effect of Seed Rate, Sowing Date and Planting Method on Growth and Yield Attributes of PBW-550 Variety of Bread Wheat

A field experiment was conducted at Panjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, India during Rabi 2008-09, to study the effect of seed rate, sowing date and planting method on growth and yield of PBW-550 variety of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L). Thetreatment included three sowing dates (25th October, 5th and 15th November) and two planting methods (bed planting and flat sowing) in the main plots and four seed rates viz: 87.5, 100, 112.5 and 125kg/ha in the sub-plots. The experiment was conducted using a split plot design with three replications. The available soil nitrogen was low while P and K were moderate. The sowing date of I5th November gave significantly higher grain yield of 56.51 q/ha, which was in par with 5th November sowing (55.60 q/ha) as compared to 25th October sown crop (47.02 q/ha). The plant height, dry matter accumulation, number of effective tillers, number of grains/ear, straw yield, ear length were also maximum at the 15th November sowing which was statistically similar to those of 5th November. Bed planting or flat sowing methods had no significant effect on growth and yield attributes. Among different seed rates the maximum grain yield, dry matter accumulation, number of effective tillers, number of grains/ear and ear length of wheat was obtained with 125 kg/ha, which was statistically similar to 112.5 kg seed/ha and significantly higher than 87.5 and 100 kg/ha seed rates.
