Insecticide resistance management (IRM) strategy was devised and evaluated for the management of American bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (HCibner) (Lep., Noctuidae) in cotton in on-farm research in Bathinda and surrounding villages, Punjab state, India in 2002 - 2003 and 2003 - 2004 which is the main cotton area in the South- Western region of Punjab. The adoption of IRM programme, based on IPM, resulted in significantly lower incidence of H. armigera with the reduced use of insecticides. Also the attack by homopteran pests was lowered significantly, and beneficials (predatory bugs and spiders) tended to be more frequent. The number of sprays in IRM plots (9.5 and 10.0) was less than in non-IRM plots (14.5 and 13.1) during both the years, which resulted in substantial savings on insecticide use. A significant increase of yield with 19.5 and 14.5 per cent in seed cotton was observed in the respective years. The resistance monilonng conduced during August and September showed that H. armigera populations exhibited lower survival for endosulfan and chlorpyriphos in comparison to cypermethrin and fenvalerate. The economic analysis showed a net return of Rs.11408 and 8662/ha in the respective years in IRM plots than non-IRM plots.
