Prolactin inhibition and galactopoiesis in buffaloes.

This study was undertaken during the summer (May-June) and winter (December-January) months. For each season Murrah buffaloes (n=4) on the 30th day of lactation were selected from the herd maintained at the National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal,India. Each buffalo received 3 injections of bromocriptine (day 30, 34 and 38) at the rate of 100μg/kg body weight in 5 ml of alcohol. Prolactin levels decreased from 212.95±61.97 to 39.21±3.64 ng/ml the day after administration of bromocryptine duringsummer months. During winter months, the reduction was from 24.28±5.19 to 17.82±4.39 ng/ml. 30 days after administration, the prolactin levels increased to 303±113.62 ng/ml during summer months and 53.42±15.80 ng/ml during winter months. The prolactin levels in the control buffaloes were similar throughout the study period (day -30 to day +30). The lactation duration and lactation yields in both seasons were similar in the experimental and control groups. It is concluded that prolactin has a limited role as a galactopoietic hormone in buffaloes and that bromocryptine is a potent prolactin inhibitor.
