Australia’s Queensland government estimates that Cyclone Debbie cut the state’s coal exports by 10mn t, according to its 2017-18 budget papers. This is less than data from the four largest coal export ports in Queensland suggest. Independent analysis of March, April and May data from the ports shows 11.5mn-15mn t of coal exports were lost because of the cyclone. Around 75pc of Queensland coal shipments are typically coking coal and a quarter are thermal coal.
