Effect of Hormonal and Herbal Therapies at Calving on Puerperal Events and Plasma Progesterone Profile in Holstein Friesian Cows

Twenty-eight recently calved HF cows of University farm were monitored for their puerperal events through clinical diagnosis and fortnightly plasma profile of progesterone from the day of calving till 75 day postpartum. The animals were equally divided into four groups, each of seven animals. Group I served as Control. Cows of Group II were treated with herbal ecbolic (Vantab), 3 intra-uterine infusions at weekly interval after expulsion of placenta. Group III cows received Oxytocin SO units and PGF2a 25 mg (lliren) i/m while Group IV cows received PGF2a 25 mg (lliren) alone immediately after parturition. The pregnancy CL regressed completely by mean interval of 8.50 ± 0.81 (range 3-21) days without significant group differences, although it was little earlier in PGF2a treated groups. The period of uterine involution was 29.71 ± 0.71 (range 22- 37) days. It was significantly (P<0.01) shorter in PGF2a treated groups as compared to herbal treatment and control groups. The interval from calving to first oestrus postpartum was 31.65 ± 1.45 (range 23 to 45) days. A highly significant difference (P<0.01) was observed between groups for first oestrus postpartum, being higher in control group as compared to treatment groups. The overall mean service period was 122.39±6.90 (range 62 to >1S0) days. It was 142.28±21.53,123±9.28,109±9.05,114.85+11.02 days in group I, II, III and IV, respectively. The treatment with PGF2a alone or in combination with oxytocin enhanced fertility in postpartum HF cows asthey had faster uterine involution and shorter service period as compared to animals of herbal treatment and control groups. The overall average plasma progesterone concentration was 2.09 ± 0.13 (range 0.1 to 7.0) ng/ml over the study period. There wasnon-significant difference (P<0.05) between treatments, but the period effect was significant (P<0.05). The levels increased gradually over the postpartum period in all groups and fluctuated as per the ovarian changes postpartum. Progesterone levels decreased at 6 hrs and 40-45 days postpartum in PGF2a treated animals indicating its beneficial role in early establishment of ovarian activity in cows.
