摘要

Many of the students that I teach have chosen a zoology programme for their final year because, while they have endured molecular biology in earlier years, they now want to be free to study whole (and preferably furry or feathered) animals without ever having to contemplate DNA again. No such luck. Zoology, animal behaviour and ecology have been transformed by molecular techniques in the last 15 years or so, to the extent that the application of molecular techniques to these disciplines now defines afield in itself, that of molecular ecology. No teaching programme in these areas can now claim to be complete without providing students a grounding in molecular ecology. Therefore I'd like to thank Beebee and Rowe for providing an accessible text thatshould maintain the interest of my fickle, whole-organism-obsessed students.
