The emergence of Intelligent Transportation Systems (lTS) hasfostered the development of advanced traveler information systems(ATIS). These systems are designed to assist travelers in makingpre-trip and enroute travel choice decisions. It is contended thatwhile many traveler information systems are innova- tive and make useof cutting edge technologies, they lack real machine intelligence andtherefore may be limited in their ability to service the travelingpublic over the long-run. The purpose of this paper is to present avision of the next generation traveler information system, termedIntelligent Traveler Informa- tion Systems (ITIS) in which artificialintelligence techniques are drawn upon to create systems capable ofproviding travelers with more personalized planning assistance.
