The pigments contained in the inner seed coats ofCucurbita pepo,C.maximaandC.moschatawere investigated spectroscopically using both intact tissues and their ether extracts. The pigment (s) contained inC.pepoandC.maximawas inferred to be“protochlorophyll”and/or Mg vinyl pheoporphyrin a5which are indistinguishable from each other by mere spectroscopic observations. The coats ofC.moschatawere found to contain Mg-free vinyl pheoporphyrin a5which has so far been reported to exist only in someChlorellamutants. The spectra of these pigments in intact tissues were remarkably different from those of the ether extracts, indicating the profound difference in their physical statesin vitroandin vivo. It was discussed that the“protochlorophyllb”reported earlier by SEYBOLD and EGLE might have been vinyl pheoporph
