FORAGING AND BROOD REARING ACTIVITY OF APIS CERANA INDICA FAB. (HYMENOPTERA: APIDAE)

Fluctuation in the foraging and brood rearing activity of the Indian honeybee, Apis cerana indica Fab was studied under Bangalore conditions during 2001 -2002. The foragers collecting only pollen, nectar or both pollen and nectar showed fluctuation during different hours of the day and also during different months of the year. There is a direct relationship between pollen foraging and brood rearing as against the nectar foraging and honey production. Only a strong colony of bees can collect more pollen and rear more brood or gather more nectar and produce higher honey yield.
