Effect of feeding protected protein on nutrient utilization, milk yield and milk composition of lactating crossbred cows.

This study was conducted to determine the effect of feeding formaldehyde-treated groundnut cake on the nutrient intake, quantity and quality of milk in lactating crossbred cows. 15 crossbred cows were divided into 3 groups of 5 animals each based on their body weight and milk yield (T1, T2 and T3) and maintained on 3 respective isonitrogenous and isocaloric concentrate mixtures (I, II and III). Each animal in all the groups were fed a standard ration, comprising of 5 kg green berseem (Trifolium alexandrinum) and wheat straw (Triticum aestivum) ad libitum. In treatment T1, animals were given untreated groundnut cake (control), whereas in treatments T2 and T3, formaldehyde-treated diets (0.5 and 1.0 g FA/100 g CP, respectively) were given as sources of protein in the concentrate mixtures, as per requirement of the animals. An insignificant difference in dry matter intake (kg/d) was observed among the groups. The average daily milk yield (kg/d) was significantly (P<0.01) higher in T3 (8.83+or-0.56) compared to T2 (7.16+or-0.46) and T1 (7.38+or-0.25) groups. A similar trend was observed in case of 4% fat corrected milk yield (kg/d). Solid corrected milk (SCM) yield (kg/d) was significantly (P<0.05) higher in T3 than in T1. An insignificant difference was observed between T2 and T3 and T2 and T1. Feeding of formaldehyde-treated (at 1.0 g FA/100 CP) groundnut cake significantly increased the milk yield, FCM yield and SCM yield in medium-producing crossbred cows.
