Influence of body condition scores at calving and during early lactation on milk yield per milking in Murrah buffaloes

Thirty two Murrah buffalo cows of different parities were scored according to their body condition at calving and during early to mid lactation period upto 130 days of milking. The number of buffaloes falling in each category of body condition scores (BCS) were BCS-I(4), BCS-II(5), BCS-III(11), BCS-IV(7) and BCS-V(5). The overall mean of BCS was recorded to be 3.16+-0.14 whereas the actual means of BCS-I to BCS-V were observed as 1.26+-0.01, 2.23+-0.02, 3.18+-0.01, 4.01+-0.01 and 5.00+-0.01 respectively. Milk yield per milking (MY/milking) at morning and evening times of these buffaloes were recorded 36 times in each buffalo during the lactation period studied. The average values of MY/milking of five BCSs were in the range of 2.00+-0.26 kg (BCS-I, day 3) to 4.89+-0.37 kg (BCS-V, Day 80). It was found that BCS had significant effect on MY/milking during most of the days under study. BCS-V and BCS-I had highest and lowest MY/milking respectively on most of the days. It was further observed that BCS was positively and significantly correlated with MY/milking.
