Cutting-edge components don't always guarantee powerhouse performance. If they did, its 1GB ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 graphics card would make iBuypower's new Gamer Mage 855 a triumphant must-have. But that innovative dual-graphics-processing-unit (GPU) card isn't enough to propel this $1,499 machine to the very top of the gaming-benchmark charts. In our tests, the Gamer Mage 855 bested the $1,269 Dell XPS 630 (see above) and the $1,099 Gateway FX7020 in Futuremark's DirectX 9 (DX9) 3DMark06, just beating them at 1,280x1,024 resolu- tion (showing a score of 11,422), and pulling ahead at 1,600x1,200 (10,902) and 2,560x1,600 (9,596). The desktop also attained 61.4 frames per second (fps) in the DX9 Company of Heroes test at 2,560x1,600, but never topped either system in other tests.
