It is well established that the UK population is increasingly aging. Forecasters predict that over the next 20 years the number of over 75 year olds, which currently constitute 9.1 of the population loi, is projected to increase substantially with numbers almost doubling from 4.8 million in 2008 to an expected 8.7 million in 2033 102. There have been many who view this as a burden to society with concerns regarding escalating social and healthcare costs to meet the needs of this aging society. However, this increase in longevity and the increase in the percentage of people who are achieving it should be a cause for celebration. Do we not strive to live longer? The answer may be yes but only if that extended period of life is of good quality.
