Head and neck cancer is the sixth most common type of cancer, representing approximately 6% of all cases and accounting for an estimated 650,000 new cancer cases and 350,000 cancer deaths worldwide each year [l]. Cancers of the head and neck arise from the mucosa lining the oral cavity, oropharynx, hypopharynx, larynx, sinonasal tract and nasophaynx. By far the most common histological type is squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), accounting for 95% of cases [2]. The remaining 5% are collectively referred to as non-SCCs [3].
