Nitration of pyrene adsorbed on silica particles by various gases,including NO_2 HNO_2, HNO_3 and their mixtures, was studied insimulated atmosphere under dark and Room high conditions. Not onlyHNO_3 but also HNO_2 acted as a catalyst. The nitration Of theadsorbed pyrene by NO_2 proceeded most rapidly when it was catalyzedby a Mixed gas of HNO_2 and HNO_3, and even faster than the sum ofwhat individually Catalyzed by HNO_3 via reaction with the mixed gasof NO_2, HNO_3 and HNO_2 may Contribute to the nighttime formation ofnitro polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the Atmosphere.
