A field experiment was conducted during 2010-11 to study the response of chilli (Capsicum annum Linn.) to graded doses of fertilizer and to formulate soil test based fertilizer recommendation for optimization of chilli yield under rice-chilli croppingsystem in a laterite soil. Before taking up the experiment, detailed morphological and physico-chemical study of a typifying pedon of the experimental site was made. In kharif season three fertility gradient strips were created (L_0L_1 and L_2) by application of no fertilizer, recommended dose of fertilizer (80: 40: 40:: N: P_2O_5: K_2O kg ha~(-1)) and twice of the recommended dose (160:80:80:: N:P20s: K2O kg ha~(-1)) for rice respectively. Rice (cv. Lalat) was grown in these three fertility gradient stripes in kharif season. After harvest of rice crop each of the fertility gradient stripes were divided in to 24 sub plots and super imposed with 21 different treatment combination of N,P, K and three absolute control plots. Chilli (cv. Utkal Abha) was taken up during rabi season. For chilli, the graded dose of N was 90,120,150 that of P2O5 were 60, 80, 100 and that of K2O were 60, 80 and 100. Finally, using the value of nutrient requirement, soil efficiency and fertilizer efficiency the fertilizer prescription equation and ready reckoner for chilli were developed.
