Ever since I joined the mental health services in Hong Kong in 1981, I have heard the name of Prof. Pow-Meng Yap from many of my seniors. Prof. Yap was greatly revered and beloved in the local setting and is regarded as the founder of modern Psychiatry in Hong Kong. I have always lamented that I did not have the opportunity to get to know him. So when I was asked to write an article on him I seized the opportunity with pleasure and pride. This article is based on information from several papers published in the Hong Kong Journal of Mental Health commemorating Prof. Yap, materials from the Archives Museum in the Institute of Mental Health of Castle Peak Hospital, as well as the publications of Prof. Yap.
