In 2003, the most important milk-producing states in the USA were California, Wisconsin, New York, Pennsylvania, Idaho, Minnesota, New Mexico, Michigan, Texas and Washington, with an annual production ranging from 2 493 000 to 16 057 000 tons of milk, and in the top 10 producer states the number of dairy cows ranged from 260 000 to 1 688 000, and the average dairy herd size ranged from 375 to 1865 cows. At some dairy farms the herd size was between 3000 and 10 000 cows.
