It is indeed a great honour and a proud privilege for me to deliver the Professor N P Gandhi Memorial Lecture this year. Being both a mineral engineer and a metallurgist, I am even more appreciative of the fact that Professor Gandhi had established a composite school of Geology, Mining and Metallurgy at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and that too in 1919. Professor Gandhi was a visionary, a great teacher and a mentor par excellence. He has left behind a proud legacy, first and foremost in BHU, one of finest schools in metallurgy and materials science in the world today and in the galaxy of metallurgists BHU has produced generation after generation and continues to nurture professional leaders to this date. Professor Gandhi's vision and mission remains the cornerstone of India's future even today. I believe the most appropriate tribute one can pay to Professor Gandhi, is to continue the great tradition of nurturing excellence in mining, minerals, metallurgical and materials engineering education, research and industry, which he so ably and passionately pioneered in India.
