Watch Out for the Pitfalls while Producing Stainless Steels as per the Specified Technical Delivery Conditions

Stainless steels are very popular grades of steel because of some unique properties like corrosion resistance under various environments, high strength, high temperature strength, creep resistance, response to welding etc. This not only provides surface protection against corrosion but also provides protection throughout the cross section of the component. All these properties can be achieved while processing the steel. Different grades of stainless steels such as ferritic, austenitic, martensitic and duplex are extensively used in chemical industries, oil and gas sector, engineering industries and for various structural applications. Selection of a particular type of stainless steel is made based on the specific requirements and the environment it is subjected to. The stainless steels pose different problems during manufacturing and fabrication stage. Some of these have been discussed in this paper. Well established manufacturing control plan and work instructions are the key factors to produce stainless steels as per the customer's technical delivery conditions. At Goradia Special Steels Ltd, all process parameters have been validated and established to produce good quality stainless steels for domestic as well as international customers. This technical paper has been written based on the experience the author had with the steel, forging and engineering industries.
