As a result of the growing volume of freight and passengertraffic, the time intervals available for track maintenance arebecoming increasingly shorter. In view of the fact that neverthelessthe full costs per shift have to be paid, special attention must befocussed on implementing the permanent way maintenance as quickly aspossible. For safety reason, the cost frame for high-speed linesincludes practically no margin for changes. Work cannot be postponed, and time interval available for work can be extended only in rarecases. However, costs can be saved by reducing the train frequencieson less intensively used secondary lines. The paper describes theprocedure for optimising the train frequency cycle. In conclusion, abenefit analysis is made to determine the optimum approach in themaintenance of tack sections with inadequate soil bearing capacity.
