NASA has long had an interest in the space radiation environment in terms of its' potential hazard to humans and hardware in space [1]. Ultimately, NASA needs to be able to assess the potential risks associated with any exposures to radiation in space [2]. In order to do that NASA needs the ability to predict the details of the exposure for any particular circumstance such as within a given spacecraft design, or on the surface of the Moon or a planet. To make such assessments, NASA must have the ability to accurately predict the incident primary source environment, and to model the transport of that flux through any potentially relevant material such as spacecraft walls, planetary atmospheres, or even the tissues in the human body. In the end, NASA also needs to be able to predict the effects of the presence of various kinds of radiation fluences to those tissues and even to the materials in the spacecraft structures and equipment.
