Ridge forming and planting of cassava cuttings (setts) are labour intensive operations. This necessitated the study into mechanization of the cassava crop. A single-row semi-automatic 'Ellis' transplan-tater was modified to plant the cassava setts. The planter was mounted on the three-point linkage of a 70-hp tractor. With easy maneuverability, it could operate at an average speed of 4.39 km/h with a field capacity of 0.39 ha/h and field efficiency of over 60. The planter required a crew of 4 persons to operate it continuously.
