A tubular plasma reactor was used to evaluate the feasi- bility ofoxidizing nitric oxide(NO)by corona discharge. The DC coronacomplelety oxidized 115 ppm of NO to Nitrogen dioxide(NO_2)in an airstream at a voltage of 11 KV. The NO_2 was further oxidized tonitrate at a voltage of 13 kV. In some cases, the residual NO_2 inthe effluents of the plasma reactor was removed quantitatively byabsorp- tion in aqueous caustic sodium sulfite. The outlet concen-trations of both NO and NO_2 from the combined corona discharge andaqueous absorption system were beyond the detection limit of achemiluminescent NO_x analyzer.
