The purchase of ITT Automotive's brakes and chassis operation is enabling Continental to move from being essentially a tyre manufacturer to a complete systems supplier. The new acquisition has been renamed Continental Teves, bringing back into prominence one of the most prestigious names in the automotive brakes industry. The group's latest technologies also illustrate its new identity, spanning as some do, the tyre and component worlds. Perhaps the best example of this is the "intelligent" tyre, which brings it into the world of the "intelligent" chassis. This is, points out Dr Thomas Becherer, project manager for the sidewall torsion sensor, "the best example of the synergy between Continental and Teves".
