South Africa's Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) has set an export target of 77mn t for this year, a record level. RBCT exported 72.56mn t of thermal coal last year, a drop of 3.3pc on the previous year's 75.4mn t, the highest amount ever for the export terminal. More significantly, the terminal's export total for last year was 5.8pc short of an original 2016 export target of 77mn t. This had already been defined as "challenging" in early February, when Transnet commercial general manager Divyesh Kalan revealed that the rail operator had faced higher-than-normal cancellations of railings from producers.
