SummaryThree hundred and eight proctologic lesions were treated by the author during a tenhyphen;year period. This incidence tends to refute the general belief that proctologic problems are rare in children. The incidence of some of the more common diseases in this series was compared with that reported by other authors and the rate was found to be remarkably similar.Various proctologic lesions which occur during infancy and childhood can be separated into the following categoriescolon; inflammatory, congenital, acquired, psychosomatic, neoplastic, and traumatic.A theory, based on the anatomy and developmental physiology of the infant perineum and rectal outlet, is presented to explain the paradoxic situation of fistulas and fissures in infants as compared to that observed in adults.
