TMC, the long awaited European traffic message channel, is now ready for the general motoring public, according to a recent announcement by Ertico, Europe's regional industry organisation for intelligent transport systems (ITS). A key European contribution to effective continent-wide deployment of traveller information, it offers fast access to broadcast real-time traffic-related information when combined with RDS (radio data system) technology. RDS-TMC provides a standard European system of communicating digital data in the sideband of FM transmissions. It uses in-vehicle receivers, such as advanced car radios or route navigation units, to relay streams of up-to-date traffic information from publicly or privately owned traffic information centres (TICs) and other sources, such as highway authorities.
