Embedding energy management sensors and visualisation functions in control systems can lead to improved consumption and sustainable cost reduction. Steve Barker, energy management consultant at Siemens Automation & Drives, explains. Many factories and facilities already use PLCs as a fundamental element of their machine or factory control. The overriding criteria for the specification of such control systems have traditionally been performance and functionality. However, in addition to factory and machine control, such systems often include data collection, interfacing with a range of field devices, feedback and performance monitoring, as well as integration into higher level 'MES' systems.
