The competitive nature of Britain's newspaper industry places big demands on automation and drives technology. Printing presses today are producing up to 90,000 copies per hour, and set-up times are critical. The trend for changing formats, from the traditional broadsheet to Berliner and tabloid sizes, has also led to the introduction of new printing machinery. Colour is now required throughout the newspaper, so four stand presses to print full colour on both sides of the web are now the norm.
