Checking watch faces for various characteristics placed great demands on the hardware and software used in an automated vision inspection solution. In the luxury watch making industry production volumes are high and quality requirements are stringent. Assembly work is often carried out manually which can lead to many sources of error. In such applications automated quality control solutions using vision technology can help ensure that product quality is maintained. However, automatic inspection in such applications places great demands on hardware and software. In one application, for example, 100% inspection of hand-mounted watch dials was required. This involved inspecting the correct position of the figures, their size, orientation and colour. The challenge arose from the diversity of different types of mounted parts and dials.
