An enabling device to keep robot teachers safe

Suzanne Gill finds out about the safety requirements, specified by robot safety standards, for humans entering robot cells. We look at enabling devices which can help ensure operator safety in all possible scenarios. The increasing use of robot-based automation within the factory environment has led to a greater awareness of machine safety requirements and to the introduction of an array of safety-related standards. The revised American National Standard - ANSI/RIA R15.06 - issued in June 1999, for example, looked in much greater detail than previous standards, at safeguarding devices and, in particular, details the steps required to protect operators when working within the robot cell space.
