The pace of change in the automotive industry is increasingly being accelerated not only by the development of new technologies, but by economic pressures. Reducing costs is as important as reducing weight: indeed, with global car production capacity estimated in The Times (8.2.99) to be about 50 higher than expected sales, there's probably never been fiercer pressure to get costs down. In a recent study, industry researcher IRB commented: "The culture of cost down has entered the UK and is here to stay."
