Global Cement (GC): How would you characterise sustainability within the Middle Eastern and North African cement sectors at present? Ian Riley (IR): For the past 25 years or so, the global cement sector has built on three main levers to reduce its impact on the natural world: Energy efficiency, alternative fuels and clinker factor. Of course, this has also brought it financial benefits, mainly from using less fuel.
