Advances made in the analysis of the flax (Linum usitatissimum)-flax rust (Melampsora lini) interaction and their implications for rust control in flax and other species are discussed. Transposon tagging using the maize transposon Ac is presented asa useful tool for isolating flax rust resistance genes. Progress made in the characterization of the 5 rust resistance gene loci and their gene products is reviewed, including flax rust resistance gene structure, expression and specificity. Evidence isgiven for intragenic recombination between alleles of the L gene which codes for rust resistance. Finally, the process of cloning rust avirulence genes to determine the molecular basis of the flax-flax rust interaction is described.
