Democrats in the US Senate have introduced a carbon border adjustment bill they are hoping to include in a stalled budget package that could pass without Republican support. The bill for the frst time would impose a price in the US on the importation or production of petroleum, natural gas, steel, cement, fertilizer and other goods that are more carbon-inten- sive than a US-based average. Democrats say the bill will sup- port domestic companies, which typically operate with lower greenhouse gas emissions than foreign competitors.
