UP expects rail coal shipments to rise

Western US railroad Union Pacific (UP) expects coal volume to rise again this year, boosted by higher natural gas prices and new transportation contracts. “Coal is changing the posture from what we thought it was” in May, shifting from a tailwind to a headwind,” chief financial officer Jennifer Hamann said on 20 January. “And we are going to leverage that absolutely as long as we can.”
