US aluminium producer Alcoa has announced a second long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) for renewable elec-tricity supply for its San Ciprian smelter in Galicia, northwest Spain, which is expected to return in early 2024 after a two-year curtailment due to high energy prices. The PPA, with Spanish utility Endesa, is for supply from new onshore wind farms being developed by Endesa’s subsid-iary Enel Green Power Espana in Galicia and expected to come on line from the second half of 2025. Supply would last until the end of 2033 for the equivalent of 131MW of base-load gen-eration, Alcoa said on Thursday. This would cover around 30pc of the energy required to meet the smelter’s full capacity of 228,000 t/yr, the US frm added.
