Since its initial development in the 1820s, photography revolutionized the way people looked at and remembered buildings. Moreover, emerging technologies have enhanced and continue to influence how people record the meaningful features, measurements, and integral elements of historic architecture. Photogrammetry is an evolution in the way pictures document our heritage. The development of photogrammetry, having a history of its own, unfolded over many decades since its conception in the mid-nineteenth century. With today's advances in computing, photogrammetry is more powerful and relevant than ever. Although many in the architectural community are familiar with the concept of digital photogrammetry and are perhaps even experienced with the technique, there can often be a fundamental disconnect between individuals implementing the photogrammetry (and therefore choosing the equipment) and those with specific expectations for output on a given project. Choosing the most practical and viable photogrammetric software can be a particularly complex task.
