Broilers can only utilize 60 to 70 percent of the nutrients from their diets due mainly to non-starch polysaccharides (NSP), and other anti-nutritive substances in the diet, The most common raw materials used in feed formulation have the following NSPcontents: Wheat -11 per cent, Corn - 9 per cent and Soybean meal - 22 per cent. Birds do not produce natural enzymes to digest these NSP's Because of this, NSP enzymes are being supplemented in poultry diets to improve digestibility. NSP enzymes degradethe non-starch polysaccharides and other anti-nutritive substances in the diet thereby increase the digestibility and availability of nutrients and thus, improve performance and economic returns. Enzymes are very specific in nature, Specific enzymes will work on specific substrates, thus, enzyme products are commonly diet/ species specific, However, research conducted by Adisseo showed that a non-GMO Penicillium Funiculusom can produce a natural combination of enzymes (at least 18 compatible enzyme activities) with ancillary enzyme activities complimenting the main enzyme activities -to degrade the complex NSP's present in diets. The natural combination includes 5 xylanases, 5 (-glucanases, 3 pectinases, 2 proteases and several other enzymes (mannanases, etc ).
