Successful storage: Farmers in Tripura pamper their potatoes

Indian fanners have proved so successful at solving potato storage problems by using traditional methods that they are giving lessons to the experts. One method used by generations of farmers in Tripura has been adopted by researchers at the International Potato Center's regional division in New Delhi as a model for an on-farm facility for storing potatoes through the summer months. Based on the traditional technique, researchers designed a "rustic, evaporative cooled store," which is, in effect a refrigerator made of easily available materials --bricks, sand, mud, straw and bamboo or sticks.
