Bright prospects await prospective cattle raisers since at present, more than 90 per cent of the country's beef requirements come from small-scale or backyard cattle raisers. Out of the estimated 1.9 million cattle nationwide, 1.74 million are in thehands of small-scale cattle raisers, or only about 160,000 cattle remain in the herds of big commercial cattle raisers. And the herds of big commercial ranchers have been decreasing through the years. So there is plenty of room to accommodate new players, even small ones, in the cattle industry, according to Martin Gomez, manager of Consuelo Farm, a subsidiary of Canlubang Farms.
