摘要

The swine industry has consistently dominated the livestock sector with 75 percent of the total livestock production shared by the swine industry in 1999. The swine industry produced about 1.4 billion metric tons valued at about P75 billion. About 90 percent of total swine production in 1999 were contributed by backyard farms and 10 percent from commercial farms. Backyard raisers are venturing into hog raising since it serves as a "piggy bank" for most of the farmers. However, the swine industry isstill beset with problems affecting its further development. These include the unabated spread of diseases, limited availability and high cost of biologics, antibiotics, and other medicaments; the need to continuously import breeding stocks; inefficientmarketing system and structures and dependence on imported feed ingredients and supplement (Phil. Recommends, 1996).
