Livestock Production and People's Lives in Tropical Countries

The term "tropical" designates the areas between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, which essentially, cover most of Asia and the Pacific. Except for 2-3 countries, most are considered developing nations. The Asia-Pacific region is predominantly agricultural in nature. In 1994, the region accounted for about 72 per cent of the world's agricultural population, although it represented only about 30 per cent of the world's arable land. In 1993, the region had the smallest unit land area of 0.26 ha per agricultural population as against the world figure of 0.58 ha per agricultural population (Sasaki, 1995).
