Mycoplasmal Pneumonia Therapy

Mycoplasmal pneumonia associated with Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae infection has beocme a significant disease syndrome in modern swine production systems. Modern systems attempt to utilize the latest technologies such as all-in, all-out pig flow, three-site production and early weaning, and they provide adequate pig space in well-ventilated, newly-constructed facilities. Mycoplasmal pneumonia is still a significant contributing factor to the Porcine Respiratory Disease Complex resulting in extended daysto market, poor feed efficiency and increased incidence of clinical respiratory disease. In an attempt to determine the economic impact of mycoplasmal pneumonia and evaluate the efficacy of lincomycin as a therapy, a university research study was initiated in which single source pigs were inoculated with Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae intratracheal at the beginning of the trial.
