(Editor's Note: This is reprinted from the November 2005 issue of Poultry International It dicusses Avian influenza (AI), major concern throughout the world. Intensive efforts have been made to develop innovative vaccines to protect flocks since complete eradication is no longer regarded as a viable goal According to the author, the world's poultry industry would be well served by development of an HVT-vectored H5 and/or H7 strain AI vaccine, which could be administered in ovo to provide protection against both immunosuppressrve Marek's disease virus and would establish basal immunity against AI, Titre against AI could then be subsequently boosted with an inactivated oil emulsion vaccine. The Annual AAAP Meeting held concurrently with the 200.5 American Veterinary Medical Association Congress provided a forum to present recent research on significant diseases of commercial poultry. The specific topics and the volume of papers and posters indicate the significance of both catastrophic and erosive infections.
