Some people call them diluents, more often they are known as semen extenders. But whichever name is used, the key point about these semen-processing compounds is that they are a fundamental component of a successful artificial insemination (AI) operation — responsible for preserving sperm viability during transportation, storage and insemination. The principles of their application are exactly the same whether the semen is processed at a major commercial AI centre or in-house on the breeding unit.
